Preparation for Skin Needling
We will recommend a skin care regime to be followed for at least 2 weeks before your needling procedure that will soften and exfoliate your skin’s outer layers. This will ultimately help make your procedure more effective. It is recommended that you stop creams such as Stieva A and Retrieve one week before your procedure.
Undergoing a light peel or microdermabrasion prior and after each needling procedure will help augment your results.
Schedule your treatment at least 2 weeks after any muscle relaxant treatment. Muscle relaxant injections may however be performed immediately AFTER a needling treatment.
If you are taking a blood thinning medication such as aspirin that increases your propensity to bruise, you may consider suspending this medication temporarily just prior to your treatment after consultation with your treating physician.
If you bruise easily you may consider taking Arnica pre and post treatment to help alleviate bruising and swelling.
You will be asked to arrive 30-60 mins prior to your procedure so that a numbing cream can be applied to the treatment area.
What to expect after your treatment:
The procedure area will look red and slightly puffy for a day or two. Occasionally, minor scratches will occur. These may last for a few days and can be covered with makeup. The deeper we penetrate, the redder and longer lasting the scratches will be. Skin needling stimulates your body to manufacture more of its own natural collagen and this process will continue for several weeks to months and even up to 1 year in some cases. Responses vary. Some patients see a discernable difference within a few weeks, whilst others take longer.
Cleanse the area with a gentle cleanser as you normally would and apply Vaseline, Bepanthen, Paw Paw ointment or your favorite healing product 2-3 times a day or as needed to keep the area moist for 72 hours following your treatment. Do not use makeup or sunscreen lotion immediately after needling as these products are not intended to be deeply absorbed into the skin.
Apply your healing product with a clean cotton bud and always check instructions and for allergies to any product prior to use. Resume use of your normal skin care products only after the area has healed completely. Regular use of Vitamins A and C, especially with a home roller, further encourages collagen growth and will enhance your skin needling results. You may apply new mineral makeup with a clean brush after the second day as needed.
Your initial course of treatments is usually scheduled at 4-8 weekly intervals. Some patients find that maintenance treatments are required at 12-24 monthly intervals, whilst for others results may persist for 5 or more years. Your need for maintenance treatments will largely depend on factors such as how well you take care of your skin, whether you protect it from the sun on a daily basis, the quality of your diet, your general health, and whether you smoke or drink excessively.
Scar relaxation aftercare
Scar relaxation treatments can be quite deep. Healing may take 1-4 days during which it is recommended that you cover the area with a loose protective dressing such as clean gauze during the day. If the breast area was treated, DO NOT wear tight bras or binding clothing as these may delay healing. Uncover the procedure area whilst sleeping. Panadol may be taken as necessary to relieve temporary discomfort. Do not use make up on unhealed skin as this can create a dark tattooing effect.
For all procedures:
The daily use of a light, broad spectrum SPF 30 sun screen is mandatory after all procedures. We recommend Ultraceuticals SPF 30 moisturised sunscreen. Failure to follow this advice may result in unwanted pigmentation and in less than desired results.
