Eribum laser skin resurfacing is the recommended treatment for those who want permanent removal of lip lines and wrinkles from around the mouth.
What is Erbium Laser Resurfacing?
The Erbium resurfacing laser uses a computer-controlled scanner to deliver pulses of energy that precisely remove wafer thin layers of skin to smooth and rejuvenate wrinkles and lines from around the mouth. The Erbium laser provides a degree of control and precision that allows your doctor to treat both deep and superficial wrinkles, layer by layer, accurately and specifically, without adversely effecting the surrounding skin. During the healing process, your body naturally replaces the old, damaged skin that was removed, with a fresh, healthy, smoother layer.
The first generation resurfacing lasers were known as CO2 lasers. These have largely been superseded by the Erbium laser because of their unacceptable side effects and prolonged recovery times. The Erbium laser is the current treatment of choice for lip lines because it involves less risk and reduced downtime than these older lasers.
What does the treatment involve?
The procedure is performed in our rooms at Broadway and takes 30-60 minutes. Numbing injections ensure your comfort throughout your procedure.
The resurfaced skin will be red and moist immediately after the treatment. Moistness subsides within days during which time a bland emollient cream is applied to speed up the healing process. Some itching or tightness of the skin my occur in the days following the treatment as your skin begins its healing response.
Healing is usually completed within 7-10 days, allowing a return to work in one to two weeks. Some pinkness may persist, especially in those with fair skin for a number of weeks. This can be covered by makeup until the skin returns to its natural colour. It is important not to expose your treated skin to direct sunlight in the first few weeks after your procedure. Hats and sunscreen must be used at all times, even if you are only walking outside for a few minutes.
Most patients are happy with the result of a single treatment, though occasionally a second treatment may be required after six months. Results are long lasting and improvements persist for years.
How do I look after my skin after the procedure?
Is there any pain?
We will ensure both your procedure and aftercare are pain free with adequate numbing injections during your treatment and pain tablets at home. You will be supplied with strong pain tablets to take if necessary during your first day at home.
How successful is this procedure?
Erbium laser resurfacing is a reliable and well controlled procedure that delivers excellent results for upper lip lines and/or wrinkles around the mouth. Results are long lasting and usually do not need to be repeated for many years.
Are there any alternatives?
Chemical peels and dermabrasion can also improve the appearance of wrinkling and skin texture, but are less controlled and consequently more risky. Dermal fillers and muscle relaxant injections provide temporary improvement in the appearance of wrinkling with no downtime.
Erbium laser resurfacing is not intended to remove deep folds or facial sag. Face lift surgery remains the procedure of choice for facial sagging.
Are there any risks?
As with any skin intervention, the potential exists for pigment changes, especially skin darkening in olive skinned patients, activation of preexisting cold sores, other infections, prolonged redness that may need to be camouflaged with makeup, and scarring, Fair skin patients who burn easily have the least risk of pigmentation. To minimise risk, patients with a history of cold sores must take preventative medication during recovery.
What are the contraindications for this treatment?
- Active cold sores or other infections in the area to be treated.
- Moles or suspicious lesions.
- Use of Roaccutane within the previous 12 months.
- A tan, either natural or artificial.
- Vitiligo, any history of abnormal healing, tendency to keloid formation, connective tissue disease, auto-immune disease or immunosuppression, or uncontrolled diabetes.
What are the treatment alternatives to Erbium laser resurfacing?
A series of skin needling treatments offer a low downtime alterative.
What else does the Erbium laser treat?
The Erbium’s an excellent tool for removing unwanted lumps and bumps such as skin tags, keratoses and nodules.
