    • What are dermal fillers?

Heber Davis in a Sydney Clinic that specialises in the injection of “natural” dermal fillers. These soft smooth gels are identical to the padding that’s found naturally in our skin. As skin ages, this padding gradually breaks down and skin sags, resulting in volume loss in the lips and wrinkles and drooping around the mouth. Dermal fillers simply augment and enhance, or replace volume that has been lost, naturally and instantly, leaving your lips looking more attractive or youthful.

Because these dermal fillers are natural gels, they are biocompatible, non permanent, rarely cause reactions and can be easily dissolved if required.

How do dermal fillers augment and enhance the lips?

Full, plump lips are always considered feminine and sexy. The ‘ideal’ lips, according to a survey of Australian women are full, natural-looking and well-defined, with a strong Cupid’s bow (the v-shaped area of the upper lip).

Microinjections of soft dermal fillers help create or restore this ideal. Fillers are carefully placed in the lips and surrounding wrinkles to enhance size, improve shape, restore balance between upper and lower lips, and to erase “smoker’s” lines. Dermal fillers allow us to enhance the natural beauty of younger lips as well as to restore the plump, sensuous look that is lost as lips thin with age.

Our goal is both to enhance the natural beauty of your lips whilst maintaining a natural look that is appropriate and in proportion with the rest of your face.

What areas of the lip can be enhanced?

Lip enhancement is not simply about making your lips bigger.

Did you know there are many other features that make lips appealing? Features such as a well defined lip border, balance between the top and bottom lip and symmetry between the left and right sides can subtly enhance any face. Even details such as smiley sides, with corners that turn slightly upwards rather than downwards, can change affect how others perceive us to be – happy and approachable vs sad or grumpy.

It’s also important to achieve balance and harmony between the lips’ component parts as well as with surrounding facial features. Depending on your lip anatomy and your goals, consideration should be given to each of the following features. Correcting one without the other can lead to an unattractive imbalance in the final result.

The border of the lip – enhancement in the border of the lip instantly creates a clear edge to the lips and defines their borders in much the same way as lip liner. Augmentation of the lip border also helps to fill out the lip lines and wrinkles that cause lipstick to “bleed.”

The body of the lip – one or both lips may be enhanced to create fuller, “pouting” look, or to restore an aesthetic balance between uneven lips.

Vertical upper lip lines, or smoker’s lines – softening these lines rejuvenates skin quality around the lips and reduces lipstick “bleed.”

The oral commissures, or depressions at the lower corners of the mouth – With aging, gravity takes its toll and the corners of the mouth begin to sag and turn downward, leaving a persistent dour expression. Dermal fillers can help turn the corners up, instantly creating a happier more positive expression. Happier, but not “the Joker”. Subtle artistry is the sign of an excellent cosmetic lip treatment.

The philtrum – which comprises the two ridges running from the centre of the upper lip to the nose. Subtle augmentation of the philtrum gives the upper lip a more sensuous shape and curve that is rated as being highly appealing.

The Cupid’s bow, in the centre of the upper lip – Accentuation of the Cupid’s bow, in conjunction with augmentation of the philtrum, creates an aesthetically pleasing contour known as the “Paris Lip.” This gives the impression of a shorter lip and reverses the tendency to lengthening and flattening that occurs with age.

Bobbly Chins: Muscle relaxants may also be used to relax the muscles that cause the chin to crinkle and wrinkle as we speak or express

Parentheses Lines Some individuals develop lines that arc around the corners of the mouth and look somewhat like a set of parentheses. These lines are usually an extension of nasolabial folds. They are often shallow, fine lines that are treated much the same way as the marionette lines. Dermal fillers are placed along the line to help lift and fill it.

      Rules of Lip Augmentation

Though beauty is in the eye of the beholder, there are some general rules that govern lip augmentation. Lips should look natural and be in proportion to the rest of your face and with each other. In general, lower lips should be 1.5 times bigger than the upper lip. Overfilling of the upper lip creates a ‘trout pout’ or “duck lip” that looks both unnatural and unappealing.

At Heber Davis our goal is always to enhance your natural beauty, never to detract from it.

      What does treatment involve?

        • We will review your medial history, discuss your goals, answer all your questions and then decide on the best treatment plan for you. We’ll give you a frank and honest appraisal of what is possible given the raw material with which you were born.
        • Before and after photos of other patients’ outcomes can be viewed to give you a realistic expectation of your own result.
        • We take photos of your lips and will use these to monitor your progress over time. Your photos will not, of course, be shown to other patients.
        • Lip augmentation and enhancement is an office procedure that takes about 30 minutes.
        • Because your comfort is important, ice, numbing creams and laughing gas are available if needed throughout the procedure. Most of the dermal fillers used at Heber Davis contain built in local anaesthetic to minimise discomfort.

Are there any alternative treatments for lip lines?

Dermal fillers represent a simple and effective non-invasive option for lip lines. They restore smoother more youthful looking with minimal downtime . Results last 4-12 months depending on the filler used. Those who’d prefer a longer lasting solution should consider Erbium laser resurfacing. The Erbium’s laser beam evaporates very fine layers of skin to smooth lines and wrinkles around the mouth. One or more week’s downtime. Results last for many years.

How do I prepare for my treatment?

See our suggestions for preparing for your treatment.

      Does it hurt?

Most patients find this procedure reasonably tolerable and require no anaesthesia other than that that is built into the filler itself. However, for those who are sensitive, numbing cream, dental anaesthetic blocks, and/or laughing gas are available.

How soon will I see results?

      Immediately.

How long will my result last?

Depending on the filler used 4-12 months.

How do I look after treatment?

Temporary redness, swelling or bruising can occur. It’s best not to schedule your treatment just before an important event. Most normal activities can usually be resumed immediately. Makeup can be applied immediately.

What precautions should I take after treatment?

Until any initial swelling and redness has resolved, do not expose the treated area to intense heat (e.g. sauna or sunbathing) or extreme cold. See aftercare recommendations.

      What are the risks?

As with any treatment that punctures the skin, dermal filler treatments carry some risk of temporary redness, swelling or bruising. Treatment should not be performed just before an important event.

Occasionally, lip enhancement may activate preexisting tendency to cold sores. We will provide you with a prescription for anti-viral medication if required.

The fillers used at Heber Davis are made of natural gels that are present in the skin and can be dissolved within minutes if required.

      What is the cost?

      From $400.

Heber Davis offers various filler specials each month as well as a regular selection of affordable filler packages. We also offer a Loyalty Rewards Programme that gives you 15% off every fifth injectable treatment (includes both dermal fillers and muscle relaxant treatments).

What are the causes of lip lines (also called lipstick lines or smoker’s lines)?

      • Ageing – As our skin ages it loses its collagen and elastin support and becomes lax. The lip gradually forms wrinkles, sags or lengthens. Loss of fat which occurs with facial aging also contributes to thinning of the lips.
      • Repeated Motion – Repeatedly pursing the lips, whether through drinking through a straw, whistling, kissing or smoking is an essential cause of vertical lines on the lips. The strong muscle, the Orbicularis Oris, which surrounds the lips, purses them during these activities and over time this continual bunching etches lines and wrinkles into the skin around the mouth.
      • Thin Skin -The thinner your skin, the easier it is for lip wrinkles to form, which explains why women are more prone to lip wrinkles than men.
      • Smoking – Smokers develop lip lines far earlier than non-smokers. Chronic puckering around cigarettes accelerates the etching of lines into the lips. Smoking also releases free radicals that accelerate further collagen and other cellular deterioration.

In spite of the connection between smoking and lipstick lines, not everyone with lip wrinkles smokes. Lip lines can appear on anybody.

What can I do to prevent lip lines?

      Preventative measures include

      • Not smoking, and opting to have your next drink without a straw. If you notice any other habits that cause you to purse your lips excessively, make a note to avoid these movements. As for not puckering up for a kiss… What good is a life without lip wrinkles if there are no simple pleasures?
      • Applying a factor 30+ sunscreen on a daily basis, whether or not you intend to be in the sun. Excessive sun exposure is a major cause of skin deterioration in Australia.
      • Supporting and nourishing your skin by following a cosmeceutical skin care programme. Cosmeceuticals contain antioxidants that help to combat free radical damage from sun and smoking.

What will I look like if I decide against further treatment? Will I be worse?

No, you will NOT be worse. Your lips will simply return to their original shape and size as your filler gradually dissolves.

      What about Permanent fillers?

Permanent fillers have been associated with increased risk of serious complications such as infection, granuloma formation (permanent lump formation that can occur even years after administration), and incorrect placement. Permanent fillers cannot adapt to the inevitable changes that occur in our faces as we age. What looks good at 30 could well become a source of embarrassment at 50. For these reasons, we do not recommend permanent fillers for our patients.

Is there anyone who shouldn’t undergo dermal filler treatment?

Dermal fillers are not recommended for those who have inflammation or infection in the area to be treated or who have permanent filler in the area to be treated. Precautions may need to be taken if you have any disease affecting the immune system or are prone to keloid or hypertrophic scarring. Chemical or laser peeling is best avoided for 2-3 months before and after dermal filling treatment. Please let us know if you are allergic to local anaesthetics.
